Cummins ISL
History

Introduced in 1999 to be the eventual replacement for the ISC, the Cummins ISL engine represented a stroked version of the 8.3L it succeeded. Its bore was the same at 4.49-inches, but its stroke came in at a torque-friendly 5.69-inches, making for an overall displacement of 8.9L (or 541 ci). Manufactured with the same deep-skirt, cast-iron block as the 8.3L, the ISL also utilizes replaceable mid-stop wet liners. Additionally, the Cummins ISL is topped off with the same cast-iron head boasting 4 valves and 6 head bolts per cylinder. Its overhead valvetrain is actuated via a single camshaft located within the block, with ISX-style roller followers being employed. Many operators reference Cummins ISL specs to compare the platform’s durability and performance.
Common Applications

Although the Cummins ISL sees use in industrial applications, its primary calling is in on-highway applications. More specifically, medium-duty vehicles. Thousands of dump, refuse, pump, and box trucks have all been graced with an ISL 8.9L (or a close variation of it) over the past 20-plus years. They’re also common finds in concrete mixers, tow trucks, fire trucks, school and transit buses, and especially motorhomes. In the latter segment, the ISL 425—rated at 425 hp—is highly popular, and all but legendary. On-highway power ratings for the Cummins ISL range from as low as 250 hp to 425 hp, and Cummins ISL horsepower figures span from 700 lb-ft to 1,250 lb-ft of torque.
Production Run

In one form or another, Cummins’ ISL power plant has been in production for more than two decades. From the original ISL to the L9, followed by the ISL G and then the L9N, the same basic engine platform has undergone a host of changes, additions, and revisions on the assembly line. Early ISL’s (1999-2003) are equipped with the Cummins Accumulator Pump System (CAPS) while 2003-later engines feature high-pressure common-rail injection and full-on electronic control. Manufacturing of the ISL was split between Cummins’ Rocky Mount Engine Plant (RMEP) in Whitaker, North Carolina and the Darlington Engine Plant located in the United Kingdom.
Why It’s Still In Demand
Throughout its production run, the Cummins ISL engine has enjoyed solid demand—demand that it earned through durability, sufficient fuel efficiency, and solid performance. Though based on the 8.3L ISC platform, the ISL handily outperforms Cummins’ larger (and near-legendary) L10 engine, as well as its successor, the M11. Long-term, 500,000 miles can be expected with proper maintenance and care. Its strong Cummins ISL horsepower ratings and balanced design contribute greatly to this ongoing popularity. As for emissions, the ISL was designed to meet today’s ultra-stringent emissions regulations, which is to say it was intended to be fitted with cooled EGR, a DPF, a DOC, and an SCR system. Last but not least, at 1,635 pounds it’s a relatively lightweight option for this class of engine, which equates to both an advantageous horsepower-to-weight ratio and the ability for the vehicle it powers to haul more cargo.
