Cummins ISX
History
Cummins introduced the ISX (or Cummins ISX15) is 1999 as the replacement for the outgoing N14. The ISX boasts 14.9 liters worth of displacement (912 ci) thanks to the inline-six power plant’s 5.39-inch bore and 6.65-inch stroke. A deep-skirt, cast-iron block uses replaceable mid-stop wet liners, and its cast-iron cylinder head utilizes 4 valves per cylinder. Early versions of the Cummins ISX engine (1999-2009) feature a dual overhead cam (DOHC) arrangement, where one camshaft actuates the fuel injectors (unit injection system) and the other actuates the valvetrain and engine brake. Later editions (2010-2020) are single overhead cam engines with Cummins’ high-pressure injection (XPI), common-rail fuel system. These details form the foundation of essential Cummins ISX specs.
Common Applications
The Cummins ISX engine is primarily recognized as a heavy-duty, on-highway engine, which is likely due to so many big name Class 8 truck manufacturers offering it. You can easily find the ISX in semitrucks and multi-axle dump trucks, but it’s also used in luxury motor coaches (where an optional, 650hp version of the ISX was offered at one time), and fire and emergency vehicles. Common off-highway applications include well servicing, mining, and industrial equipment, but the ISX platform is also in regular use in marine vessels, namely in powering commercial fishing and passenger transport boats. Power ratings for the 3,000-pound ISX range from 385 hp to 605 hp, and 1,450 lb-ft to 2,050 lb-ft of torque. These broad performance ranges continue to define core Cummins ISX specs.
Production Run
Built on the historic assembly line of Jamestown Engine Plant (JEP) in Jamestown, New York, the Cummins ISX was produced from 1999 to 2020—although it began to be phased out in 2016 in favor of the X15. Essentially just a revised Cummins ISX15, the X15 uses the same block, bore, SOHC design and cylinder head, along with utilizing a high-pressure common-rail injection system. The ISX’s birthplace, the Jamestown Engine Plant, produced its 2 millionth engine back in 2018, many of them being ISX15’s and X15’s. As of 2025, it’s safe to say that well over 1 million ISX15’s and X15’s have been manufactured at Cummins’ western New York facility.
Why It’s Still In Demand
It’s not perfect by any means, but the Cummins ISX engine is one of the most durable over-the-road heavy-duty truck engines in the modern era. It was specifically designed and periodically revamped to endure the harsh operating environments that emissions-curbing technologies such as EGR, DOC, DPF, and SCR create. Early ISX engines (those with the CM570 or CM870 ECMs) are favored by many due to their lack of emissions equipment or only being equipped with EGR. However, the ISX’s ability to maintain class-leading durability while meeting the most stringent emission standards in the world makes it the preferred workhorse for most Class 8 truck owners.
